My studio is based in Melbourne, Australia. It's my own space and is like my meditation. 2022 was an amazing year of growth and had some incredible moments such as being featured in Vogue Turkey and House and Gardens UK, movie sets in America and many photoshoots, as well as personal home decor all around the world!
It truly blows my mind! At the start of 2023 my work will be in an exhibition in Sydney and Paris.
Growing up, art was always around me. Each one of my siblings were very artistic and creative. I spent a lot of time creating pieces for my friends and family for fun. Many years later, during the lockdowns is when my passion for clay came about once again, which is when Carms Clay was established.
I started creating when I was very young. I wasn’t serious about it at all, and like I mentioned above, I played around with clay for fun, making pieces for my children. My work has evolved over the last 20 years and I’ve changed styles by experimenting and going with the flow per each piece.
I admire the world around me and take complete inspiration around the unusual elements of the sea and beautiful nature that surrounds me, which is a reflection of my work. I love that my pieces show all different forms of art, such as the thick curves of the sculptures all the way to the delicate waves of the bowls.
Defining my style is never completely set in stone until I create my base. If I don’t feel it in the pit of my stomach, I start all over again that’s the beauty of clay. Once I find my style for the piece, I just let my hands create whatever they feel in that moment with clay it's easy to manipulate anyway you like.
My sculptures are different and unique and completely hand-built. I see shapes everywhere and I incorporate that into my work with a playful and in-perfect manner. I would definitely consider my art on the unique, quirky side. Each piece is completely one off and special in its own perfect way!
My favourite artist is Barbara Hepworth. She was the first women to achieve international prominence. I’m so fascinated by her abstract sculptures. Especially the way she was inspired by nature and everything around her! Just like myself. I really resonate to her and her work. Such a genius!
It’s incredibly hard to choose just one favourite piece because they are all my favourite!
But if I had to choose one, it would be ‘The Mother and Children’ sculpture. I was really connected to it and it pays homage to my beautiful mother, father and all my brothers and sisters.
